Many open source contributors first get involved while they are students, but this is almost always on their own time. At Seneca College we have developed an approach to sustainably involving students in open source communities that has proven successful in a course setting.

This paper outlines Seneca's approach and discusses the results that have been obtained with it. We will examine the key factors for successful student integration into open source communities and steps that educational institutions and open source projects can each take to improve student involvement.
